"HUNK" (ハンク Hanku) is the code-name of a legendary mercenary and a former Umbrella Security Service operator, who was the leader of the ill-fated Alpha Team in the employment of Umbrella. Cold, silent, and devoid of emotion, he is ruthless and willing to complete a mission by any means necessary. He and the U.B.C.S. Sergeant, Nikolai Zinoviev, were considered to be "rivals".[3][4]
Biography
Early history
"This is war. Survival is your responsibility...[5]" |
Almost nothing is known about HUNK's history, not even his real name. The earliest piece of information relating to him was that he received training at the Military Training Center on Rockfort Island in 1996.[6][7][excerpt 1][excerpt 2] For two years, HUNK carried out a large number of successful operations for Umbrella. He was notorious for being the sole survivor of many of these missions, earning the nickname, "Grim Reaper".[8]
Raccoon City Incident (1998)
HUNK and another of his soldiers during the G-Virus recovery mission
In mid-September 1998, HUNK operated as commander of Alpha Team tasked with breaking into Umbrella's NEST and stealing the G-Virus from Dr. William Birkin as part of Operation: NESTWRECKER. Having cornered Dr. Birkin in his laboratory, HUNK initially ordered Birkin to accompany them along with the virus samples, but Birkin - zealous in his work - refused to allow anyone to meddle with his life's work. Enraged, Birkin pulled out a handgun, leading the other U.S.S. member to shoot William with his Submachine Gun.
With Birkin presumed dead, HUNK collected the case and left the lab with samples of the G-virus, as well as the t-Virus. With their main objective complete, the team headed through the tram into the sewer to reach their extraction point. While en route, they were confronted by the doctor once again, who had injected himself with a sample of the G-virus shortly after being shot. Birkin, now a horrifically mutated monstrosity named "G", pursued Alpha Team and exacted revenge for the theft, during which, the case was spilled. "G" then proceeded to consume the G-virus samples and damage several t-Virus vials; the resultant leak infected scavenging sewer rats, poisoned the local sewer water, and eventually contaminated the city's water supply after the rats reached the local dam.
HUNK prepares to leave Raccoon City.
HUNK and GOBLIN 6 were the only survivors of Birkin's attack, the latter of which died on Sept. 30th. Unmoved by his comrades' demise, HUNK solely focused his efforts on returning a surviving virus sample to his superiors. About a week after Alpha Team's confrontation with William, U.S.S. helicopter pilot NIGHTHAWK contacted HUNK and arranged to meet him at the Raccoon City Police Station's helipad. HUNK reported he had the virus, but all other members of Alpha Team had been killed, and that a clean-up would be necessary. As he entered the police station, HUNK's radio unintentionally caught the signals of the doomed efforts by the police to control the situation and 777 RC-Radio's last broadcast.
HUNK found his path impeded by a number of creatures, including a T-103 Tyrant, before successfully reaching the RPD's east hallway. During that time, he received GOBLIN 6's desperate pleas for rescue; unable and unwilling to go back to the sewers for her, HUNK refused her request for aid before finally reaching his extraction point and being evacuated by NIGHTHAWK.
Afterwards, HUNK was tasked with delivering the virus to Christine Henry in Loire Village.[9]
Rockfort Island Incident and the End of Umbrella (1998-2003)
HUNK was assigned on a mission to deliver a special container from Umbrella's transport terminal in the Antarctic to Rockfort Island. The mission was controversial in that Alfred Ashford, the island base's commander, refused to detail exactly what was inside the crate. This, to HUNK, posed a clear safety and security hazard as his unit would have been potentially unprepared to handle what was inside.[10]
Following the 2003 fall of Umbrella, he became a legendary mercenary and created the CQBZ (Close Quarters Quarantined Battle Zone) fighting style based on conventional CQB tactics, as well as equipment and custom weapons formulated for it, including the Zombie Beil, Zombie Eisen, Zombie Jammer, and the Bite Guard.
