Otto was a member of Claire Redfield's convoy. His role was driving the school bus.
History
Otto's role in the convoy was that of a driver, and drove a renovated, armoured school bus designed to carry the convoy's children. Otto's responsibilities included passing out food to the convoy, being able to identify the contents of the cans by merely shaking the object, a skill he considered a "dying art".[1] During the convoy's stop at the Desert Trail Motel, they were attacked by a murder of crows. Otto attempted to drive the school bus away, but the windshield's view was obstructed by the birds and he crashed the bus into a pole. He and Nurse Betty stayed behind to hold up the broken windshield to block the birds from entering the bus, allowing the others to leave.. Eventually, the crows were able to get through, pushing Otto out of the way and outside the bus, landing helplessly on the ground where he was pecked to death. A grave was soon made for him and the others killed in the attack.

Further notes
- In early drafts of the film, Otto was to survive an attack on Desert Trail by Undead, and would instead be killed when the crows attack the convoy in Las Vegas. The crow attack and Otto's death would later be moved and replace the Undead attack.[2]
- In Keith R.A DeCandido's Novelization of Extinction, Otto's Last name is Walenski, this, however Is not considered to be Canon.
