Poison is a health-related game mechanic in a number of Resident Evil games.

Description

Certain attacks are capable of inflicting this condition on the player. It causes health to slowly drop; depending on the game, it may leave the player at 1 HP, or be capable of killing them outright. While Green Herbs and Red Herbs can still heal, they will not remove the poison. In some games where the character's health affects their body language, poison will force them to limp.

Blue Herbs are the most common antidote, and are typically found in the same areas as poisonous enemies. Sometimes, there are also objects that can cure poison an unlimited number of times, such as large pots full of Blue Herbs. Certain enemies, like Nosferatu and Yawn, have poison attacks that cannot be cured by normal means, and consequently a special serum is required.

Incurable cases

In some cases, the poison status isn't curable for story-related reasons. In Resident Evil (1996) and Resident Evil (2002), if the player gets bit by Yawn during its first fight in the attic, the player will be poisoned and will need a serum to be treated.

In Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999) and Resident Evil 3 (2020), when Jill Valentine gets infected by Nemesis-T Type at the start of St. Michael Clock Tower's courtyard fight, she'll need a vaccine to cure her t-Virus infection.

In Resident Evil: Code Veronica, Claire Redfield will get poisoned by Nosferatu if she keeps inhaling his released toxic gas during his fight on the heliport. If she does, Chris Redfield will need to find a serum for her.
